The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA), founded in 1966, is a professional organization dedicated to the profession of dance/movement therapy. Dance/movement therapy (DMT) uses movement to "further the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of the individual." Through movement, DMT can help individuals with a wide range of psychological disorders achieve greater self-expression.

The ADTA:

  • Advocates nationally and internationally for the development and expansion of dance/movement therapy training and services.
    • Holds an annual conference and supports chapters, regional groups, conferences, seminars, and workshops.
      • Stimulates communication among dance/movement therapists through social media, publication of the American Journal of Dance Therapy, and the ADTA newsletter. ADTA has members in 48 states and U.S. territories and 30 countries
